Where Winds Meet: Fishing Guide & How to Start Fishing

I’ve recently become a huge lover of fishing in video games. If you had asked me a few years ago whether I liked in-game fishing, I would’ve said heck no. I never touched it back then, but now I find it so relaxing, and I love collecting all the fish! The fishing in Where Winds Meet isn’t too complex, but here’s a quick guide with pictures to help you get started. This guide is based on the PS5 controller, so those are the buttons I’ll be referring to throughout. Let’s get started!

Step One

The first step is obtaining your fishing rod. You’ll naturally reach this location as you progress through the main quest, but if you didn’t grab the rod or want to start fishing early, you’ll need to travel to the Stonewash Strand Teleport in Qinghe Verdant Wilds. The exact map location is pictured below.

Once you reach the teleport, talk to the angler Chu Shuiyang, who will be standing right behind you fishing. When you speak with Chu, you’ll see an option to request a fishing rod. Select that option, and Chu will gift you a Kid’s Fishing Rod.

Step Two

The second step is equipping the Kid’s Fishing Rod. Open your menu and select the Bag tab under the Character section at the very top. Once you’re in the Bag menu, make sure you’re on the tab with the two crossing swords on the far left—it should automatically bring you there by default. Then, press R2 to switch over to the Quick Use tab. From there, you should see the Kid’s Fishing Rod listed below. Select it and place it into one of your three quick-use slots.

Once you have your fishing rod equipped, exit out of the menu. Then press the up arrow on your D-Pad. This should bring up a screen that looks like this.

Next, press the square button to start fishing.

Step Three

Once you start fishing, select which bait you want to use. Press L2, then press X or the Triangle button to cycle through your available bait options. Leave it on whichever bait you decide to use.

Once you have your bait selected, cast your line using the Square button. The game will then prompt you to 'Press X to shake the fishing rod and lure fish.

Once you’ve successfully hooked a fish, the game will bring up a fishing mini-game screen. Use your left stick to move the white line around. Your goal is to keep the white line within the green section until the fish is fully reeled in.

The game will then prompt you to press X to reel it in.

And there you go, you’ve successfully caught a fish!

Side Note

Here’s a little side note. As I was catching fish, I noticed I wasn’t seeing any updates in the compendium. At first, I was confused and thought maybe there wasn’t a section for fish, which made me a little upset at first, but after looking around, I found that there is a fishing compendium.

Go to your menu and open the Compendium tab underneath the Story section. Once you're in the Compendium, tab all the way over to the Local Charms section at the bottom. From there, tab over to Fish and Insects.

Inside, you’ll notice that there is indeed a fish codex; however, it appears that you need to catch 10 of each fish for it to count toward being officially collected.
